Hat Creek Performance horses is a family owned and operated training facility. Alex Alves was born as an equestrian, as at an early age, he competed extensively with Hunter Jumpers, Western and English Pleasure successfully. During his teenage years, Alex was a successful contestant on several rodeo circuits competing as a team roper and calf roper, all while riding horse at the Polo Clubs and Race Tracks in the area. If there was a chance he could learn from someone at any point, he jumped at the opportunity. Whether it was attending a clinic or riding with a top trainer he was always there learning and developing his own techniques, taking what he liked from one person and applying it to his horses. Now specializing in Colt Starting, Cutting, Working Cow Horse, Ranch, Rodeo and Rope horses he strives to always better himself. Alex is now a proven NRCHA competitor and colt starting challenge grand champion.

Alongside her husband, Sonja takes care of the business side of things and is often found in the arena taking care of the day to day routine including chores and keeping up with the well being of the horses.  She will also be found behind the eye of a lens whether it is for pictures or videos to update the progress on the horses or capturing the latest training video.

The little ones are often found tagging along, dreaming up their own horse training or competition scenarios or playing with their dump trucks while watching along the day to day operations.

What sets us apart?

There are many choices available when it comes to horse training.  Likely, there are also as many definitions for horsemanship as there are horses.  So what do we do that's different?

Well...if you have trained with us before, you know the answer :)  Here's a few of our beliefs:

  • We recognise that every horse and rider is a unique combination of ability and experience.  From novice to advanced riders, from colts to experienced competition horses, we're here to help you progress.  We have no levels and no prerequisites.

  • We firmly believe that your success as a rider or trainer is based on the success you bring to your horse.  Learning how to consistently achieve success for your horse will put you a step ahead of the rest.

  • Improving your horsemanship skill starts with learning about the horse: how he moves; how he's put together.  Our clinics feature biomechanics and anatomy components so what you do with your seat, hands and legs makes sense.

  • Every one of our clinics is structured around 1 on 1 time with you and Scott.  We focus on you and your horse as a team with specific skills and requirements.  The training you do with us is tailored to you.

  • Learning how a horse thinks and perceives his environment is a fundamental.  When we show a horse we can be a trusted leader and teach him how to handle pressure, we eliminate 'problems' and 'issues'.

  • In a word: FUN!  Equine pursuits are meant to be enjoyable.  We cultivate an atmosphere of camaraderie, support and enjoyment of all things equine, regardless of discipline or experience.  The fun doesn't end on our obstacle course or trails.  We have pot luck dinners, campfires and offer camping right next to a private stall for your horse.  Perfect for a getaway weekend with friends, family and horses.

Scott Phillips

The owner of Amazing Horse Country, Scott has a wide variety of experience in the horse industry including backcountry/mountain riding, outfitting, training horses and riders, starting wild horses and running the Canadian Cowboy Challenge.  When not teaching, you can usually find Scott training and riding his own horses...or working on new obstacles!

Scott teaches the fundamentals of horsemanship in an enjoyable and interactive way.

You'll learn to create, shape and inspire the thoughts and motions of a horse, resulting in the horse finding peace, fluidity, balance, confidence, success and pride.

Scott's goals are:

  1. To promote the art of horsemanship by assisting riders in increasing their knowledge of the horse and developing their skills and abilities as horsepeople;

  2. To bring a greater awareness of the potential we can reach when we work with the horse's mind and body together - in all equine pursuits - and the importance of horses in our lives;

  3. To inspire fun and excitement for riders and their equine partners through creative and challenging obstacle courses, trail riding, mutual encouragement and camaraderie;

  4. To create a world for riders and horses where anything is possible.
